Excited to continue the A Closer Look series with Cosmic Unicornz. I hope you enjoy this step into a rainbow filled world with this brand!
When did you start your business?
In December of 2012 I launched my etsy shop with the name Cosmic Unicornz. I had 8 pairs of hand-painted shoes at the launch. Since then, I’ve painted 100’s of pairs of shoes, handbags and jackets, designed several t-shirt/sweatshirt collections, and recently began designing dresses and skirts.
What is your favorite part of creating your products?
I love every second of it! From drawing up the design, to making it, to styling and shooting it at photo shoots… I am absolutely in love with what I do!
Meet Melissa Thyden of Cosmic Unicornz. Their studio is in Boston, Massachusetts and they are currently an online boutique with frequent pop-up shops throughout New England at festivals and various events.
How did you come up with your brand name?
“I wanted the name to be something whimsical. Unicorns are magical and epic, just like our designs! “
How did you get into your field?
I went to UMass Dartmouth for illustration. All of my paintings and drawings had a real focus on fashion. Once I graduated, I began painting on clothing and selling it at local craft fairs. It grew and grew and now I own a successful clothing line!
What is your favorite/most popular product you have made to date?
I have this tank top that says “I want to be a unicorn and a mermaid at the same time”. I’ve sold out of those every time I get them in stock. As for favorite- I just designed this holographic skirt though that I think is my favorite/best thing I’ve ever made.
Where do you want to see your brand in 5 years?
Really successful online boutique with a cult following. I also want to start vending at big music festivals like Electric Forest. Maybe I’ll open a shop in Salem. I love the witchy, Halloween forever vibe in Salem, Ma.
What is your brands aesthetic?
We have this 90’s rave girl/pastel goth/streetwear/punk rock vibe happening.
What/who inspires you to create?
I have really great memories from my childhood of playing with all those colorful 1980’s toys- My Little Pony, Rainbow Bright, Lady Lovelylocks and the Pixietails, Gem and the Holograms, Treasure Trolls, Barbie……. They inspire me! Currently I’m obsessed with the Monster High Dolls.
Obsessed with 80’s power ballads. Listen to those guitar solos. Epic.
Networking and collaborating are VERY IMPORTANT. You can’t do it alone.
