We are back with a closer look at ReblKitty designs! A lovely west coast based designer with the will to make everything sparkle! Enjoy getting to know the girl behind the magic!
My name is Tonya and my brand name is ReblKitty
I’m 27 years old. I just moved my business to Las Vegas from San Diego.
I think I was a unicorn in a past life.
How did you come up with your brand name?
Choosing the right name that translated well with my products and my personal style was difficult. I went through a couple names with family and friends before I finally chose Reblkitty. It’s a name that represents who I am and my own fashion and lifestyle. ReblKitty has that edginess mixed with a magical playful side.
When did you start your business/ How did you get into your field?
My love for EDM all started back in 2007 when I went to my very first Insomniac event. Dressing up for each event and planning outfits is my favorite part of the whole experience. In 2009 I started fashion school at FIDM in San Diego studying visual communications. Throughout my life I’ve always been the “creative one”. I love fashion and creative spaces so I pursued that in school. In 2010 I moved to the LA FIDM campus to finish school. I was only 20 years old living in LA where all the EDM events where poppin. My love for EDM was growing! I became a Gogo dancer part time while finishing school. These were some of my best memories dancing with my Gogo troupe at events like Audiotistic, Nocturnal Wonderlandand Beyond Wonderland.I used my fashion and creativity with dancing for every event. Once I was finished with school and moved back to San Diego. I was working Visual merchandising jobs for multiple retailers. It didn’t give me any inspiration working for a company and helping them become successful. I wanted something for myself! It wasn’t until 2013 when I was living with barely any money in my bank account, no job, I realized what I wanted to do. I wrote a business plan that summer and started an Etsy shop in September.
What is your favorite part of creating your products?
This is a hard question for me because I love multiple parts of the whole process. Starting with getting to know the girl and her style. Then shopping for the materials(I love shopping) then designing, It allows me to express myself! Then the final reveal, showing the customer fills my heart up making new friends with every person I design for.
What is your favorite charity to support as a brand and how do you show your support?
My favorite charity to support is an organization based in in my city San Diego, The Princess Project. It helps teens go to prom and provide them with a free prom dress. I volunteered for this non-profit in 2015 with my friend who has been a part of it for years. It’s all about making these high school girls feel like princesses. Which is very similar to the way we want ReblKitty customers to feel for their big event.
What/who inspires you to create?
My customers inspire me the most with their out-of-this-world ideas. Sparking ideas off each other just lights this fire in my soul and magic just starts happening. A lot of my customers I’ve become close friends with through social media and sometimes I just create things based of what they like.
What is your favorite/most popular product you have made to date?
I would say ReblKitty sunnies are very popular with everyone! My best friend’s grandma even has a pair! Lol, people stop me all the time when I casually wear a pair out and compliment me. They are just so much fun to have and I love matching them to people’s personalities. You can never have just one pair either, I have several customers with a whole collection.
If you could describe your brand as a planet, colors and textures, how would you describe it?
Glitter glitter and more glitter! I’m obsessed with everything that sparkles. So it would probably be an aura crystal planet with a holographic castle, and unicorns would be flying around it.
What is your brands aesthetic?
Basically your inner rave goddess
If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it consist of?
I’m from San Diego so I have a very chill style even though my designs show my funky festival side. I love oversized T-shirts, leggings, converse, flannel and a snap back. That’s my “go-to” look, but I will wear sequins any chance I get! What I really wish is that we could all just dress like we are going to a festival everyday!
Ok, so back when I first started my business I had a very difficult customer. I didn’t have that many back then and I was taking any I could get. But I had this gut feeling about her that no matter what she would be unhappy. She changed her mind several times, didn’t like anything but I didn’t want to lose the sale. Sure enough, she stopped the check she sent and gave me a horrible…horrible review. I remember her still to this day because ever since that happened to me I have made it my mission to never have a bad review again! My advice is, you get stronger with your mistakes. So don’t be afraid to fail, count them as winning because you grow, learn and become stronger as a business.
