I am excited to bring you a creative spotlight about a wonderful event I have had the pleasure of attending and experiencing for myself. The event is magical in so many ways, I hope you enjoy this piece on getting to know a little more about the curator and her creation!
My name is Jaina Cipriano and I am a portraiture and documentary photographer. I capture magic and do my best to use my camera as a tool to integrate myself in the world and not as something to hide behind. I am also a writer, an herbalist and an aspiring painter.
When did you start throwing these events?
I’ve been throwing them since June 2016.
What is your favorite part of creating these parties?
There’s so many things I love about throwing these parties. I love watching the other artists experiment and grow in their work. I love seeing new friendships form. I love seeing the genuine smiles on faces I don’t normally see smiles on. I love creating these spaces, using my art brain in a new way, and then getting to see all the angles it’s viewed from. Each photographer offers me a unique view of something I created and that really helps me grow in my work!
How did you come up with this concept?
Immersion originally came about as a way to get a group of friends together for a night of photography. Once I started thinking about 3D installations though it took off. I’ve always wanted to make art in a much more dimensional way but I’ve never enjoyed viewing art like that in museums because you can’t interact with it. I want to create beautiful spaces that are fully interactive, immersing myself in that kind of creation thrills me.
The mantra behind it all
Don’t let fear stop you from experiencing magic! I’ve been dealing with a lot of my own fears this past year. As someone said to me recently, when you’ve been in the pit you can see the pit on other people. As I work through my own fears I see the same fears in so many others and I want to create a space where, even if just for a night, those fears can begin to fall away and people can see the true magic and beauty shining within them.
What/who inspires you to create?
I’ve always been very inspired by cinema. Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch are huge visual inspirations of mine. Their sprawling settings and deep colors. Truly though I am just spurred to create by a voice inside me, she is always there, even in my darkest moments, telling me to create. I don’t think I could live without creating. It’s like breathing.
Give us a fun fact about your vision.
I’ve received a lot of backlash from adults who’ve been in the general area of an Immersion party (mostly neighbors or landlords) but the magic just seems to get stronger. Immersion is starting to grow on its own and I cannot wait to see where it takes us.
